How book fairs work in Spain

Spain has a dense, widely spread fair calendar: almost every provincial capital holds one between April and June, with open-air stalls, a 10% discount and author signings. The Madrid Book Fair, in El Retiro park, is the largest and sets the pace of the publishing spring; Sant Jordi, on 23 April, is not a fair but a day — and in Catalonia more books are sold on that one day than at many entire fairs.

In autumn the focus shifts: LIBER gathers the trade, alternating between Madrid and Barcelona, the Setmana del Llibre en Català opens the season in Barcelona, and Seville has moved its fair to late October. Festivals — Hay Festival Segovia, Getafe Negro — round out a year with no real off-season.

This page is updated whenever organisers publish new dates. If a fair shows as "dates not yet announced", it is because the date is not officially confirmed, not because it will not take place.

Frequently asked questions

What is the biggest book fair in Spain?

The Madrid Book Fair, in El Retiro park, with more than 350 stalls and thousands of signings each edition. It runs from late May to mid June.

Are Spanish book fairs free?

Public fairs (Madrid, Seville, Valencia, Bilbao, the Setmana) are free to enter. LIBER is a trade fair with accreditation. Festivals (Hay Festival, Getafe Negro) mix free events with ticketed ones.

Is there a discount on books?

Yes. Spain has fixed book prices by law, but book fairs are allowed to sell at a 10% discount at their stalls — the one exception all year.
