What it is and why go

Madrid holds two antique book fairs a year on the same promenade: the spring one (Feria del Libro Antiguo y de Ocasión, late April to mid May) and this autumn one, organised since 1989 by the city council with LIBRIS, the antiquarian booksellers' association. Both are free.

Do not expect new releases: this is for digging. Out-of-print editions, 1960s and 70s paperbacks, manuscripts, magazines and prints sit next to collectors' pieces worth several hundred euros. The booksellers know their stock and you can ask for specific titles.

Tips for your visit

Bring a list

With dozens of stalls and thousands of uncatalogued titles, going with three or four specific searches keeps you focused.

The first days have the best stock

Rare items go early. If you are after something specific, do not leave it for the last weekend.

Metro Banco de España or Colón

The promenade runs between the two stops (L2 and L4). The Recoletos commuter rail station is right there too.
