Montreuil is not a general book fair. It is the meeting point of the entire children's books world — publishers, booksellers, librarians, teachers, illustrators — and, at the weekend, families arriving in their thousands.
The opening days are largely given over to school groups and trade visitors; at the weekend the tone changes completely. Signings, illustration workshops, readings, an early years area and four themed stages: literary, comics, voice and decoding.
Each edition has a theme running through the programme and the central exhibition. For 2026 it is empathy, under the title "the art of the other".

Saturday and Sunday are the family days, and signing queues form from opening. Friday afternoon is calmer.
